President Hong Wenyuan Speech on 10th AMA Board meeting

To all dear members:

Good afternoon!

It’s been almost two years since I have been fortunate to have the pleasure of being president of the Australian Minnan Association (AMA). How time flies! Fortunately, we can gather together during the coronavirus pandemic to consider matters and share our passion for our hometown.

On behalf of AMA, I would like to report to all directors and hometown fellows on all activities accomplished by the Association in the past two years:

On 28 July 2019, the tenth board of directors was successfully established, and the 20th Anniversary Celebration of AMA was held smoothly.

On 8 September 2019, with the help and support of all hometown fellows, we successfully held the Bo Bing activity to celebrate Moon Festival in a tight timeframe, and this has received compliments and positive feedback from attendances and other Chinese Australians Associations.

AMA has been holding Moon Festival and Bo Bing celebration for more than twenty years. With the help and support of every president, directors and all hometown fellows, this event has become the best Chinese traditional cultural event held by Chinese Australians Associations in Australia.

At the end of October 2019,  a bushfire raged in New South Wales, Australia. During the Bush Fire Danger Period, many houses and properties have been destroyed and many people lost everything. In virtue of the Minnan spirit that human beings would stick together through thick and thin, the Association donated $1,200.00 to NSW Chinese Community Bushfire Appeal on 29 November. Personally, I donated $5,000.00 at the same time.

On 13 December, the Association donated $2,300.00 to the Salvation Army. I, personally, donated $5,000.00 to homeless people whose houses burnt by bushfires. On 15 March 2020, each of us, Vice president, Biqing Hong, Chairman, Danny Hong, and I, donated $5,000.00 to NSW Rural Fire Service to help people who affected by bushfires. After that, I also donated $1,000.00 to the Sydney Seniors Learning Society to express my high respect and admiration for seniors’ tireless efforts and hard work in studies.

In early 2020, Coronavirus outbroke in China. Considering the shortage of medical supplies during the pandemic,  the Association purchased 1,500 pieces of protective clothing through various channels and donated them to the Red Cross Society of China Fujian Branch. 1,300 of them have been designated to Quanzhou Municipal People’s Government and 300 of them have been designated to Quanzhou Orthopaedic Hospital.

At the same time, Ms Hongya Cai, Ms Biqing Hong, Mr Danny Hong and I together purchased 2,500 protective clothing and donated them to Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government. In addition, Ms Biqing Hong, Mr Danny Hong and I together purchased 10,000 surgical masks and donated them to Yinglin Town People’s Government.

AMA has received letters of appreciation separately from Fujian Provincial People’s Government, Quanzhou Municipal People’s Government and Yinglin Town People’s Government for the generous donation. They all fully affirmed the Association’s consideration and support for people in hometown.

Unfortunately, the 2020 Moon Festival and Bo Bing Celebration cannot be held due to the pandemic. After discussion, the board of directors approved that giving moon cakes as a present to Minnan hometown fellows and donating $50.00 to every senior those who are over the age of 65. Moon cakes are 500 totally and cash gifts are 108 totally, which are donated by Ms Biqing Hong, Mr Danny Hong and I.

In the past two years,  the Association has received more than 60 international and domestic guests including international guests from Philippines, China and other countries, and local councillors and representatives of local Chinese Australians Associations as well.

Finally, I would like to appreciate everyone’s constant support and contribution to the Association, especially the help and support I have received regarding the matters in the Association in the past two years. I hope directors can keep the good work together to take our association to a new level and continuedly to serve our Association, fraternal associations and people in our hometown.

Wishing you good health and happiness!

Thank you for your time.
